If you write or speak to me about these items in German after you have used them, you will receive extra credit. In addition to learning from these materials, I hope that you will also enjoy them and want to learn more. If you are interested in any of the materials I have, please let me know. You may check them out any time you wish. I do ask that you only check one item out at a time.

Easy Readers are carefully selected works of well-known authors whose original texts have been shortened and simplified without sacrificing the original style. With their managable structure and and controlled vocabulary based on international word frequency research, Easy Readers can be easily understood at various levels of instruction. A-books (A) contain about 600 words; B-books (B) about 1,200 words; C-books (C) about 1,800 words; and D-books (D) about 2,400 words.

Die Weiße Rose by Scholl (B)
The author tells about her younger sister and brother, Sophia and Hans. They were members of a German resistence group known as, Die Weiße Rose, during the Second World War. They wrote and distributed illegal pamphlets against the Nazi government. All members were found and executed in 1943.

Alter John by Härtling (B)
Alter John is a story of members of the Schirmer family, who ask Alter John, Mrs. Schirmer's father, to move in with them. They experience bot the difficulties and the happiness of three generations living together.

Einen Dieb fangen by Steiger (B)
A group of Swiss schoolboys from a Gymnasium in Bern has gone to a school camp in the mountains. Overnight all the housekeeping money disappears. A hunt with a very surprising outcome begins.

Christa Wolf factually presents her experiences of life in the former East Germany, illustrating the politcal tension in her country.

Der Gasmann by Spörl (B)
One of Germany's best known writers of humor spins a story line involving a man who becomes more and more deeply involved after accepting a large amount of money from a train passenger who suddenly disappears.

Das Feuerschiff by Lenz (B)
The crew of a lightship rescues three unlikely looking companions from a drifting boat. When they turn out to be dangerous criminals, the captain's inaction appears to his men to be cowardice, and they take matters into their own hands with disastrous results.

Kein Schnaps für Tamara by Martin (B)
The author is one of the most successful detective story writers; many of his stories have been made into movies. The story begins as the narrator finds the body of a dead girl on a train trip. Subsequently he searches for a solution to this mystery.

Emil und die Detektiven by Erich Kästner (B)
This internationalyy known story follows Emil from his hometown to Berlin, the capital of Germany. On his way to visit his aunt, his money is stolen by a train passenger. Upon his arrival in Berlin, Emil finds a lot of support among kids his own age who help him track down the thief.

So zärtlich war Suleyken by Lens (C)
A collection of humorous and charming short stories details the author’s expoeriences as he grew up in a small town in Masuria, formerly East Prussia and now part of Poland.

Mensch Karnickel by Herfurter (C)
A fifteen-year-old boy, separated from his family during the war, encounters many emotional and physical obstacles in searching for his mother and his house. When he finally finds the house, he is reunited with his mother, but also confronted by two new people, a man and a boy.

Flucht ins Fremde Paradies by Mechtel (C)
Due to fog, the plane from Athens landed in Cologne and not in Frankfurt as planned. On board are Farideh, 12, and her brother Freydoun, 14, from Iran. The uncle, who was supposed to pick them up from the airport, never turns up, but there is a trail.

Fälle für den Kommissar by Reinecker (C)
You will enjoy trying to solve the crimes in these two exciting detective stories. Filled with intrigue and suspense, these stories are guaranteed to grab and hold your interest.

Drei Männer im Schnee by Erich Kästner (C)
This famous story, which has been made into a movie, follows two characters who are placed suddenly in reversed social roles. Herr Tobler and Dr. Hagedorn have each won a trip on a luxury resort. Herr Tobler, a multimillionaire, checks in as Herr Schulz, looking rather poor, and Dr. Hagedorn, who is struggling to get a job, is treated royally. (Herr Johnston also has this book available in the original version.)

Das Brandopfer by Goes (C)
This is a moving story about a German woman whose mounting horrore at the inhumanity shown towards Jews during the Second World War comples her to offer herself as a sacrifice for the world’s guilt. Ignoring an air-raid warning, she allows her house to burndown. But her gesture is transformed into affirmation of the continuing existance of love when she is rescued by one Jewish person she has befriended.

Novellen by Zweig (C)
Three strories demonatrate Zweig’s concern with human goodness and weakness.

Lehmanns Erzählungen by Lenz (C)
In six stories, Lehmann reflects on his return from the war and how he got caught in the net of the black makret in which people wheeled and dealed with objects such as cigarettes, meat, silver, and even monuments, always conscious of the fact that he might get caught.

Der kleine Grenzverkehr by Erich Kästner (D)

Auf heißer Spur - Erlebnisse in Deutschland by Rita M. Walbruck
Larry and Carol, two American teenagers, encounter unexpected experiences during their year in Germany as exchange students. This is a series of four books: Der verlorene Koffer, Das Rätsel vom Waldsee, Im anderen Deutschland, and Die falsche Agentin.

Teil 1: Der verlorene Koffer
A mix-up of suitcases at the Frankfurt airport causes Larry and his friends to become entangled in an international smuggling ring dealing with mostly stolen diamonds. Our heroes are instrumental in the eventual breakup of this smuggling ring and gain the reward they deserve.

Teil 2: Das Rätsel vom Waldsee
This suspenseful adventure leads our heroes to the discovery and undoing of a sinister plot against the entire Bavarian state. Teil 4: Die falsche Agentin
Ulla and Ingrid become entrapped by a travel agent's offer to take a bargain vacation trip. All turns out well at the end, however, when their friends put an end to a shrewd con game that has cheated them and others out of money for a vacation trip that does not exist.
